Counselor-in-Training (CIT)
Volunteer Program
 

The CIT Program offers teens the opportunity to develop professional skills and experience while having a wild time at the Zoo. CIT volunteers will be trained to lead camp games and activities, interpret Zoo animals and exhibits, and to practice important professionalism skills. And, after summer camp is completed, CITs in good standing will be eligible to volunteer for Audubon's Holiday Camps and Nature at Night Events throughout the following school year.


About the CIT Program:
The CIT Program offers teens the opportunity to develop professional skills and experience while having a wild time at the Zoo. CIT volunteers will be trained to lead camp games and activities, interpret Zoo animals and exhibits, and to practice important professionalism skills. And, after summer camp is completed, CITs in good standing will be eligible to volunteer for Audubon's Holiday Camps and Nature at Night Events throughout the following school year.

To participate in Audubon’s CIT Program, you must show proof of COVID Vaccination or provide negative COVID test results from within the 72 hours prior to each training session/volunteer shift.

CIT Training:
CIT Training will occur on five Saturdays in April and May. Training will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 23, April 30, May 7, May 14, and May 21. Lunch is included for each training day. Attendance at all five training days is required. 

CIT Shifts for Summer Camp:
Once training is completed, CITs will be required to volunteer for at least one 2-week block during summer camp. Shifts each week are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  • June 6 - June 17
  • June 20 - July 1
  • July 11 - July 22
  • July 25 - August 5

CIT Program Applications & Interviews:
All youth ages 14-17 years are invited to apply to join our team of amazing CIT volunteers. The CIT Program Application is a quick online form that will take 5 - 10 minutes to complete. All applicants who submit their CIT application by March 19 will be invited to join our group interviews in late-March.

  • Applications are due March 19, 2022
  • Interview invitations will be emailed on March 22, 2022
  • Interviews will be held March 30, 31, and April 1, 2022
  • Acceptance status updates will be sent on April 8, 2022

CIT Program Fee & Scholarships:
The tuition for the CIT program is one-time $110 fee. Tuition covers the cost of uniforms, training day lunches, and training materials.

Scholarships that cover the whole tuition fee are available but are limited in number. Any youth who qualifies for free or reduced lunch at school is eligible to apply for a CIT Program scholarship. Please complete this brief CIT Scholarship Application if you qualify.
