Penguins

african penguin in waterPerhaps our most popular pastime... watching penguins at play!

Nearly two dozen African penguins make their home at the Audubon Aquarium, some hatched into the colony right here and some hailing from other AZA-accredited institutions. This species of penguin, native to South Africa, is well adapted to a temperate climate, rocky shoreline, and marine habitat. They may seem awkward on land. but beneath the sea, they fly! See which penguins you can identify: juveniles are charcoal-gray, males have blue flipper tags, and females have red flipper tags.
