Malayan Sun Bear

Animal Facts

Sun bears each have a yellow or white crest on their neck and chest. Each crest is unique and can be used to identify individual animals. This often bright "sun" colored crest is what gives the species its name.

Sun bears can range up to nearly 200 lbs. Males are a third larger than females. Bears of mainland Malaysia tend to be up to 40% larger than bears from the islands.

Under human care sun bears can live into their early 30's. In the wild, it is estimated that they live 10-20 years though it is difficult to know with this secretive bear.
