Youth Development Intern (Aquarium)

The Youth Development team at Audubon Aquarium of the Americas is seeking candidates interested in working with teen volunteers for the Youth Development Internship.

Internship Overview:

Each summer the Volunteer staff selects 15 teens (ages 12-14) for the AquaKids program, and 10 teens (ages 14-18) for the Eco Ambassador program. Students attend summer training and volunteer weekly September through May. Both youth volunteer programs focus on life sciences, animal information, conservation issues, presentation skills, and volunteer policies through hands-on activities and field trips. Interns will assist with training and continuing education while learning basic interpretation techniques, curriculum development, and youth training protocols. 20-35 hours per week, minimum 200 hours. Internship is unpaid.

Internship opportunities follow the youth volunteer schdule and are available 3 times during the year, dates below:

January - May

June - July

September - December


  • Basic understanding of Biology and Animal Sciences
  • Interested in pursuing a career in education, interpretation or youth development 
  • Passion for conservation efforts
  • Must be comfortable working with teens
  • Excellent presentation skills with the ability to adapt to audiences of different ages and sizes 
  • Must display aptitude for positive, creative problem solving
  • Must display willingness to interact with live animals, including fish, invertebrates, and reptiles
  • Ability to supervise and communicate with youth volunteers
  • Ability to stay on feet for prolonged periods of time
  • Ability to handle prolonged periods of time outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
  • Ability to work under and handle stress in an appropriate manner required.

About Audubon Internships
Basic internships last approximately 12 weeks, in which interns develop a variety of professional skills through guided instruction and hands-on experience. Some advanced placements, lasting up to 6 months, are available for well-qualified candidates.

In addition to the core curriculum provided through each professional track, Audubon offers its program participants supplemental opportunities to learn about the operations of an AZA-accredited facility, the care and management of a diverse animal collection, the tools needed to engage and inspire guests, and much more. 

Audubon accepts applications for available positions on a rolling basis. If no deadline is indicated in the position description, please refer to the schedule below for each session’s start window and application deadline. Be sure to indicate your preferred session on your application. An intern’s exact start and end date will vary according to the needs of each section.
