This park is located in Lower Coast Algiers, on the campus of the Freeport-McMoRan Audubon Species Survival Center. It is a natural and secluded green space with basic amenities housing the NALCO Visitor Center, a loop trail, picnic shelters, and restroom facilities.
Directions & Parking
Audubon Wilderness Park is located in Lower Coast Algiers on the campus of the Freeport-McMoRan Audubon Species Survival Center.
- Take I-10 to Mississippi River Bridge.
- Cross the bridge and exit at General DeGaulle East.
- Continue along General DeGaulle East to the Intracoastal Waterway Bridge.
- Cross bridge and bear right on LA Hwy 406.
- Continue on Hwy 406 until you reach the Freeport-McMoRan Audubon Species Survival Center and Audubon Center for Research of Endangered Species. The entrance will be approximately six miles past English Turn. Hwy 406 ends at the entrance gate.
- At the Entrance you will see a large chain-link gate. Drive through the gate and check-in with the guard in the small guardhouse to your left. The guard will direct you to Audubon Wilderness Park.
- Please park only in designated parking spaces and lock your vehicle—Audubon Nature Institute is not responsible for theft or vandalism of your property.
- Visitors are prohibited from leaving the Coast Guard access road between Park Patrol and the Wilderness Park except to enter the Park.
- Please open the gate to enter the Park and close it behind you before parking your vehicle. The gate must stay closed when not in use.
Trip Tips & Guide
Audubon Wilderness Park visitors must check in with Park Patrol at the main gate, sign the Park log and follow the designated roadway. Visitors are prohibited from leaving the Coast Guard access road between Park Patrol and the Wilderness Park except to enter the Wilderness Park. Park only in designated parking spaces and lock your vehicle—Audubon Nature Institute is not responsible for theft or vandalism of your property. You are entering an area with native wildlife and plants at your own risk. Please review information along the boardwalk on poisonous plants and venomous creatures found in the area. Be sure to review all Park Rules before you visit.

All individuals and groups, when in the Wilderness Park, shall comply with all applicable ordinances, rules, regulations and orders of the United States, the State of Louisiana, the City of New Orleans and all of the rules and regulations governing Audubon Wilderness Park.
- Horses
No bridle trails are available at the Wilderness Park. Horses are prohibited in the Park and on the Coast Guard access road. - Service animals
For their safety, pets are not allowed in Wilderness Park. Guests with disabilities are permitted to bring service animals to Wilderness Park. Service animals exhibiting signs of ill health or aggressive or erratic behavior will not be allowed. Animals whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support (ESA), therapy animals or animals that provide a service to others not present (dogs in-training) do not qualify as “service animals” under the ADA and are not allowed in the Wilderness Park. Pets, ESA and other service animals are allowed in Audubon's other public parks. - Trash
Littering is strictly prohibited. Please use receptacles and recycling bins to dispose of all trash. - Music
In accordance with the City’s noise ordinance, amplified music and DJs are not allowed. Please respect the natural surroundings and do not play a radio or other sound device so loudly as to disturb others. - Alcohol Consumption
No alcoholic beverages are allowed at Audubon Wilderness Park. - Fireworks
No one is permitted to discharge fireworks of any kind at Audubon Wilderness Park. - Weapons
No one is permitted to discharge firearms. All weapons are prohibited, including, but not limited to, firearms, slingshots, bows and arrows, and knives longer than four inches. - Fires
Fires are not allowed except in a designated fire ring during organized educational programs. - Overnight Camping
Audubon Wilderness Park is for day use only. Overnight camping is prohibited except for educational programs offered through Audubon Nature Institute. - Trail Use
To preserve habitat, please stay on the hiking trail. Bicycles, motorcycles, ATVs, and other motorized vehicles are prohibited from the trail. The hiking trail is handicapped accessible; wheelchairs and mobility scooters are allowed. - Park Boundaries
Please respect park boundaries. Audubon Wilderness Park is surrounded by private property. Please do not enter areas beyond the posted boundaries.
