Instead of holding their breath, these beetles trap air under their wings before diving below the surface; they can use the oxygen they have trapped to breathe while swimming underwater.
Range
This beetle is an aquatic freshwater species typically found in permanent, open waters, such as lakes and ponds. They are found in southeastern Canada, the eastern United States, along the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, and in the Bahamas.
