Directly responsible for the environmental education, personal safety and positive experience of Audubon Zoo campers. Also responsible for the supervision and mentoring of Junior Counselors and C.I.T.’s (Counselors in Training) assigned to the group.
Provide a guest experience of outstanding quality
- Move campers through the zoo grounds in an educational and safe manner. Utilizing the exhibits and animals to teach environmental education and responsible stewardship for the planet.
- Be responsible for all aspects of a zoo camp day including: assisting with crafts, playground supervision, restroom assistance, lunch and snack assistance and supervision, water park dressing and water play safety.
- Also oversees cleanliness of class area, inventory of play equipment and games, efficient non-wasteful use of educational supplies and assisting with morning and afternoon carpool.
Weave quality entertainment through the guest experience
- Assist and Implement activities that reflect the zoo's educational goals.
- Provide a positive and fun learning environment.
- Provide a safe environment and maintain discipline.
- Perform duties in a professional manner that reflects a positive role model for all.
Educate our diverse audience about the natural world.
- Maintain supplies, materials, and classrooms. Keeping things organized and being respectful of costs and waste.
- Oversee the health, welfare, and happiness of campers.
- Understand and encourage an appreciation of differences/diversity.
- Communicate accurate information about the zoo, its inhabitants, and conservation.
- Foster participation in positive environmental actions, both at camp and at home.
- Encourage scientific pursuits, interests, and study among campers.
- Maintain schedule of activities – be with assigned group at all times.
- Carefully observe campers behaviors and report to Camp Director or director of Education.
- Provide youth staff with clear and written instructions/responsibilities.
- Evaluate and meet with youth staff weekly. Submit written evaluations to Camp Director each Friday by 4 p.m.
- Communicate to parents in a positive and realistic way about observable behaviors. Seek support from Camp Director when problems arise. Complete written reports when necessary.
Supervision: Manages the Junior Counselors and Counselors in Training.
Experience: Teacher certification or equivalent classroom teaching experience. Proven skills in program development.
Experience successfully teaching/relating to children aged 4 –11.
Education: Bachelor’s Degree preferred or required in Education or Environmental Education.
Licensure/Certification: Louisiana Certified Teacher
- Attendance: Mandatory training days, as outlined in applicant letter. Session I: June 3-July 1 Monday - Friday Session II: July 8-Aug 4 Monday - Friday
- Ability to stand, stoop, sit on the floor, and endure the outdoor weather for extended periods of time.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Experience and ability to supervise other staff in the completion of day-to-day camp activities.
- Willingness to be a positive role model to adolescents in the workplace.
- This is a position that requires lots of walking and being outdoors in the heat. Exposure to outdoor conditions is required.
- Sitting or standing, bending, stooping, and the ability to carry items weighing up to 40 pounds.
- Constant adequate range of motion and mobility required.
- Regular near acuity with clarity of vision at 20 inches or less required.
- Typical ability to collect and analyze numerical and written data and verbal information to reach logical conclusions and ability to determine the time, place and sequence of operations or actions required.
- Regular talking and the ability to express and exchange ideas by means of language expected.
- Regular hearing and the ability to perceive the nature of sounds.
- Constant ability to read, record, or type data quickly and accurately required.
- Working long hours between breaks or meals required.
- Ability to work under and handle stress in an appropriate manner required.
- May be exposed to high, medium, or low noise intensity.
- Constant contact with co-workers required.
- Affinity for animals preferred.
- Exposure to fluctuations in temperatures is required.
