Animal's Behavior
The white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) is one of the largest mammals on land weighing up to 7,900 pounds. White rhinos are the largest of the rhino species. They have three toes and nostrils that are widely-spaced, and a wide mouth.

Eating Habits
White rhinos eat grass.

White rhinos are found in southern Africa.

Conservation Efforts
People have been poaching rhinos for centuries, and lately poaching has accelerated, and poachers are even using methods such as GPS to locate rhinos. Rhino horn is prized in some cultures for perceived but unproven medical benefits. Despite increasing penalties, many poachers feel the risk is worth it in exchange for money to be made by selling rhino horn. White rhinos are approaching near threatened status.

Animal Facts
Rhino horn is made of keratin, the protein found in hair and nails. While rhinos prefer to drink water a twice a day, they can go up to five days without water.
