The VIR Training Programs Intern produces engaging training materials for Audubon Volunteer training.
The Volunteer and Intern Resources Training Programs Intern will provide support to Audubon Nature Institute’s Volunteer and Intern Resources (VIR) department. VIR trains and supports over 300 adult volunteers and interns across our family of facilities. Tasks include information processing, research, maintaining up-to-date course materials, assisting the department with program delivery, designing and implementing a volunteer training program. The candidate will report to work at Audubon Zoo in Uptown New Orleans.
In addition, the intern must be able to fulfill the position's duties as described in compliance with Audubon Nature Institute’s rules, policies, and procedures. The candidate must responsibly manage sensitive information and contribute to offering a safe, family-friendly, and educational environment for our staff, volunteers, and guests.
Internship is unpaid, minimum of 15 hrs per week.
Skills and duties required of this position include but are not limited to:
1. Provide support to the Volunteer and Intern Resources Department in the implementation and delivery of adult volunteer programming by:
- Researching and preparing research material about the animals in our collection,
- Maintaining and processing volunteer records in our volunteer database (Volgistics),
- Researching environmental studies and conservation topics,
- Editing and updating course materials such as handbook, handouts, and quizzes,
- Assisting with training event preparation, delivery, and breakdown.
2. Provide quality customer service to both internal and external customers and maintaining professional working relations with guests, employees, volunteers, interns, and student workers.
3. Speak to small groups of volunteers about collections and exhibits and set a positive example of guest engagement best practices.
4. Observe and report all facility/safety problems, volunteer/guest feedback, or other issues of concern to the Supervisor. Report immediate safety risks to the nearest staff member. Maintain professional composure and calm demeanor for other staff, volunteers, and guests in the unlikely event of an emergency situation.
5. Any other duties as requested by supervisor(s).
Minimum job requirements include:
1. Ability to communicate effectively (fluent English is preferable) and to follow oral and written instructions,
2. Willingness to give oral presentations to small groups of volunteers,
3. Ability to work independently with guidance from Coordinator,
4. Providing a warm and welcoming experience to all Zoo volunteers and guests by practicing top-notch guest services, possessing a friendly and personable attitude, and taking pride in interacting with staff, guests, and volunteers with wide-ranging ages and interests,
5. Performing physical tasks, including lifting loads up to 50 pounds and walking/standing for up to 75% of his/her shift.
