The Texas Blind Salamander is an endangered species that lives in the water-filled caves of the Edwards Aquifer near San Marcos, Texas.
Audubon Zoo has achieved much success with breeding the Texas Blind Salamanders. The breeding program has produced salamanders that were hatched and reared from eggs at the Zoo's Reptile House and Amphibian Conservation Center. These efforts are very important in ensuring the security of the captive population. Audubon Zoo is currently the only Zoo with a Texas Blind Salamander breeding program, and one only two zoos maintaining this animal.
